e.l.f Cosmetics is a makeup make we all know from adolescence, and because of this, it's often misjudged as a brand meant for preteens experimenting with dirt-cheap makeup.
Up until a yr and a one-half ago, even I was guilty of being besides bossy to give due east.l.f. a off-white shot. I'm so glad I finally did.
eastward.l.f., short for "Eyes Lips Face up", was founded in 2004, a cruelty-free company created for the purpose of providing women with high-quality makeup at low prices.
My favorite YouTube beauty guru (KathleenLights) has always raved about east.50.f. Cosmetics' ability to kick butt when compared with makeup ten times more expensive.
Only does east.l.f. really produce high-quality makeup, or are their low prices indicative of the way their products perform? And what are the all-time and worst e.50.f. products?
Keep reading to find out. I've tested pretty much everything, and here's where the products stacked up:
Primer:
For me, e.fifty.f. primer has not only washed its job, but held its ain against several other drugstore primers I ain and employ. I love the primer I have from e.l.f.
Possibly due east.l.f. primers are fabricated solely to complement east.l.f. foundations and I oasis't tried my Tone Adjusting (Brightening) Primer with enough other foundations. It's possible. However, when something pairs so well I endeavor non to push my luck.
Fifty-fifty if eastward.fifty.f. primers don't stack upward to pricey ones, they all feel loftier-cease on the skin and have relatively non-offensive odors to them.
For $half-dozen you can't wait the e.50.f. Hydrating Primer to piece of work better than the Likewise Faced Hangover Replenishing Primer ($32), but you can certain as heck salvage some coin past choosing east.fifty.f..
Verdict: If you, similar me, adopt spending on foundations and saving on primers, go buy an east.l.f. primer. For but $six, you might even desire to endeavor one with skincare effects, like blotch control or hydration! At the very to the lowest degree, these primers will add salubrious variety to your drove.
Grade: B+
Foundation:
I accept always been skeptical of cheap foundations, which is why I was hesitant to believe the hype surrounding due east.l.f. foundations. Subsequently all, your base determines how the rest of your makeup will look. It needs to be good!
After giving e.l.f.'s Flawless Finish Foundation a whirl, however,I am officially a truthful believer in $6 foundation.
Non only did this foundation compete well with my $40 foundation, but information technology survived the ultimate exam: an outdoor summer concert.
Pre-concert (around 2pm), I applied my foundation. Then I went to the show. I didn't take my makeup off until 1am, and when I did, I was surprised to discover that my foundation looked just as skilful s information technology had when I first applied information technology! And did I mention this foundation has SPF 15?!
Though I've only tried "Flawless Terminate" other e.fifty.f. foundations, such equally the Acne Fighting Foundation, accept gotten rave reviews online.
For those with oilier skin, I'd simply recommend being cautious of the Beautifully Bare Foundation Serum because information technology's a thinner consistency and may not adhere to the skin besides as the others. Otherwise, yous're good.
If there's one product e.l.f. makes consistently well, it'southward foundation.
Verdict: Speaking as someone with very dry skin, the Flawless Finish Foundation looked refreshingly natural (like my skin, but better) and didn't cling to my dry patches as much as other more expensive foundations.
The only complaint I have about e.fifty.f.'south foundations is most the lack of a decent shade range. Otherwise, for an impressive $half-dozen-$8, e.fifty.f. foundations might be your skin savior.
Grade: A+
Concealer:
Every bit much equally it pains me to say this, e.l.f.'s concealers have let me down.
Time afterward fourth dimension, powder after pulverization, e.l.f. concealer proves to crease much more easily than comparable drugstore concealers. If you spend the extra money to get the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer, for instance, y'all'll be infinitely more satisfied.
Verdict:Equally much as I wanted to similar this formula, eastward.fifty.f. concealers simply aren't flattering, peculiarly in the nether-heart region. Spend your coin on a more dependable concealer that won't practise you muddy.
Grade: D
Confront Powder:
e.l.f. face powders are just like their foundations in the sense that the shade range isn't great.
If you're lucky and you tin actually find a pulverisation that closely matches your skin tone, e.l.f.'s pressed powders are great for setting and mattifying the face, and giving extra coverage if it is needed.
Translucent powders from the brand too aid in setting your makeup to give it a more than airbrushed effect, and are not supposed to cause flashback.
Co-ordinate to the e.l.f. team, using their High Definition Pulverisation sparingly and applying information technology to the face in circular motions with a castor is supposed to prevent unfortunate flashback from happening.
Though I haven't used the regular HD powder, I have used the HD Undereye Setting Powder religiously and have never had a trouble with applying it or flashback in photos.
Verdict: e.l.f. powders are finely milled into an impressive formula that could definitely be sold for a higher price. Considering of how great a deal they are and how well they perform, these powders are a smashing value, peculiarly for the amazingly low price-point.
Form: A
Blushes/Bronzers:
Much like the formula for the pressed face powders, e.l.f. has an equally impressive formula for its blushes and bronzers. The available shades are flattering and blend hands on tiptop of foundation or blank skin.
The single blushes and bronzers are great, but to get the most bang for your buck I recommend the blush and bronzer palettes, which come up with iv shades each.
Verdict: Yous tin can't go wrong with most e.l.f. face products, and the blushes/bronzers are no different. If you find a shade you lot love, don't hesitate to pull the trigger and purchase it!
Class: A+
Contour/Highlighters:
due east.fifty.f. contour and highlight palettes are another smashing addition to your makeup collection. The packaging for these palettes is identical to the blush and bronzer palettes, and the formulas are pretty much identical too.
The baked highlighters that eastward.l.f. sells are also extremely popular, particularly the shade Moonlight Pearlswhich is perfect for fairer skin tones.
Verdict: Contour and highlighter palettes on the market tin can toll upward of $45, and so it's refreshing to run into such good quality versions at such a low price. If you're in the market for new profile or highlighter shades, you'll want to snatch these upwardly.
Grade: B+
Eyeshadow:
e.fifty.f. eye products are all over the map in terms of quality and performance, just in that location are a number of solid products that work really well and are definitely worth your hard-earned coin.
The Mad for Matte eyeshadow palettes are a peachy value, and contain gorgeous colors that have decent pigmentation and are easy enough to blend. This palette currently comes in three shade families (Nude Mood, Summer Breeze, and Holy Smokes), and like their proper noun suggests, they just contain matte shadows.
The Prism Palettes consist of half dozen shimmery shades, but feel even more luxurious than the Mad for Matte shadows and look beautiful on the optics. If yous were to purchase a single eyeshadow product from east.l.f., the Prism Palette in "Naked" should be information technology.
Another standout center product past due east.l.f. is their Smudge Pots, which are basically gel-similar foam eyeshadows. My favorite Smudge Pot shade is "Wine Non" because of its unique purple/grayish tone (not just because of the proper noun, I swear!)
The unmarried baked eyeshadows are too nice, but stake in comparison to the previously mentioned products.
Verdict: Because of the variations in quality of eastward.50.f.'due south eyeshadows, you should do your enquiry earlier ownership certain products.
As I said, the Mad for Matte Palettes, the Prism Palettes, and the Smudge Pots are worth the coin, simply all other products are iffy. With products this inexpensive, you either get what you pay for or you become much more than.
Grade: B
Mascara:
Considering the packaging on individual due east.l.f. products is and then generic (and sometimes doesn't even state what the product really is), it'southward particularly hard to tell their mascaras apart from one some other.
This is too how I experience about the actual mascara formulas. Despite what each mascara claims to do for my lashes, they all ever give me the aforementioned mediocre results.
On the other hand, e.l.f.'due south new Mascara Primer is a standout product — it really does piece of work to lengthen and volumize lashes earlier you fifty-fifty use your mascara!
Verdict: Non worth it — there are many better drugstore mascaras out there. Even though e.50.f. mascaras only cost $2-$3, I'd rather spend an actress $3 for other drugstore versions that volumize and lengthen amend.
Grade: D
Eyeliner:
Much like e.fifty.f.'s mascaras, their eyeliners are more often than not not popular in the dazzler community.
The felt-tip liquid liners and the pencil liners are but OK. For me, they sit down on the lower-quality end of the drugstore liner spectrum.
The saving grace of e.l.f.'s eyeliner collection is their Cream Eyeliner that comes in a small pot with a tiny brush (which I don't intendance for). The creaminess and pigmentation of this product are difficult to believe for such a low toll-point, and information technology glides on the eyes with little try.
Verdict: Fifty-fifty for such depression prices, I propose passing on the liquid and pencil liners from e.l.f.. The cream eyeliner is the only product in this category that I recommend, especially in the funky teal color in a higher place!
Grade: C
Lip Products:
e.l.f.'s lipsticks are consistently skilful, regardless of the end or color.
The Velvet Matte Lipstick formula in particular, although not as long lasting as I would similar, is amazing for the toll signal. The non-drying, crazy pigmented formula feels luxurious on the lips, and information technology's simply $3!
e.50.f.'s Lip Plumping Glosses and Liquid Matte Lipsticks are too worth mentioning.
Fifty-fifty though the new lip glosses don't increase the book of your lips, the shiny yet non-glutinous formula gives the illusion of fuller, juicier lips.
Their new liquid lipstick range, notwithstanding, isn't every bit great. Information technology boasts cute colors, yes, simply it is definitely a dry formula and will enhance every line on your lips.
Verdict: e.l.f. has a lot of reliable lip products and many great colors to choose from. And the quality is great for the cost. Get east.l.f. lip products if you lot desire to experiment with colors outside your comfort zone for inexpensive.
For me, the lip plumping glosses are a must-have.
Grade: A-
Brushes:
due east.fifty.f. makes some of the best inexpensive makeup brushes out there.
The eyeshadow Blending Brush, the Ultimate Blending Brush (for the face), and most of the Beautifully Precise Brush Collection (with clear handles) are my favorites, but almost all of their brushes (aside from the $1 brushes, which shed), are awesome.
Although it's not a brush, I exercise want to mention that the e.l.f. blending sponges don't live upwardto the other e.50.f. tools. due east.50.f. sponges are much denser than virtually other sponges out at that place, and then they don't offer great blending results.
Verdict: You can rarely go wrong with a castor from e.fifty.f. and I highly recommend trying as many of their brushes as you tin. I would, still,be wary of the $1 brushes from e.50.f., since they tend to shed like crazy.
Equally for blending sponges, only stick with the $half-dozen Real Techniques version.
Grade: A+
Overall Brand Review:
Overall, e.l.f. is a undecayed make for good-quality makeup, which is surprising considering how cheap their products are.
east.l.f. has continued to prove that higher-cease makeup doesn't necessarily come with a higher-end toll tag, making it my favorite drugstore brand of all time (sorry, Wet n Wild!)
While not every product is a winner, due east.50.f. as a brand has a lot going for it and is absolutely worth trying.
With all the cool new products east.l.f. just released, I can't wait to run across what else they have in store. Count me amid your biggest fans, e.l.f.!
